Mediterranean meets Scandinavian

“Rawness and refinement are not opposite ends of a luxurious spectrum. They are two complementary features with which to populate a luxe environment.” - Kelly Wearstler

Mediterranean style is marked by a certain rusticity, and evokes the feeling of an era when things hadn’t quite moved into the fast-paced, technologically-driven world that we live in today. Spain was behind the rest of Europe for so many years, and the vestiges of those decades are still felt today: by the old women walking around the village in their house dresses & slippers, to the laundry hanging out front windows. So when you combine this ‘old world’ charm with simple & clean refined style from the Scandinavian countries, a beautiful thing happens.

Hidden off a quiet corner in a sleepy village on Mallorca’s west coast is an absolute treasure, and we were lucky to be invited in to see this beautiful property by our friend and real estate agent, Isabelle Degermark of Degermark Fine Homes. In preparation for listing it for sale, Isabelle asked Pernilla Danielsson and us to style & shoot the home to show it in its best light. We were greeted with the rawness of the overgrown & beguiling garden when we entered, perfectly paired with the soft & subtle Scandinavian style inside.

We love Scandinavian style, and in fact Apartment Therapy once called our Berlin apartment ‘Minimal Scandinavian’ so it’s no surprise we are drawn to clean, minimal & restrained interiors. But we also live & breathe color, and sometimes people think these two things cannot coexist. We wholeheartedly disagree, so we set out to do just that when styling this special home.

We pin-pointed the bedrooms in the casita - which had been newly built and perfectly integrated amongst the fig & lemon trees of the garden - as the perfect place to start to layer in color. In the pink bedroom above, the homeowner had started with this rich red striped rug, which we loved. Because we love tone-on-tone, we knew immediately pink would pair perfectly with the red, so we layered in three different tones of our hand painted pink textiles to complete the look. What do you think? Pretty in pink?

Situated with rustic & weathered wooden shutters leading directly out of the casita into the bougainvillea, this bedroom screamed for us to style it blue. Again, the homeowner clearly has her own knack for color because she had picked this striking navy woven rug and one-of-a-kind vintage kantha blanket, which she had sourced from one of our favorite Scandinavian designers, HAY. We had recently painted the softest baby blue pillows on our vintage hemp material and knew they would bring a textureful contrast to the Indian bedcover and soften up the geometry of that rug. We couldn’t have been happier with how it all came together.

The mixture of weird textures and organic surfaces creates an interesting dialogue. - Kelly Wearstler
