It was October 2014 and we still hadn’t decided where we would build our new lives together and this new textile business we were dreaming about. We were talking to a friend about ‘cloth & clay’ and what we were looking for in a new home, and a place to slowly build a new business from scratch. He said ‘Well, if you like Berlin but crave the sun, why are you not going to Barcelona?’ So we picked up our bag (we had been traveling light around the world and had very few belongings!!) and went to Barcelona.
Bali to Berlin - Part 2
It was March 2014 and we were barely 3 months into our year-long sabbatical, and we’d already decided that we wanted to start some type of creative venture where we could work with our hands. We were excited for the 9+ months we had to go & to see the other places which we’d earmarked for travel — Thailand, Africa and parts of Europe — but we were also anxious to write our business plan and get going!
Brooklyn to Bali to Berlin to the Baleares - Part I
We like to think that behind every good brand is an even better story, so we’d love to share a bit about who we are and how we started doing this thing called espanyolet.
We can’t really talk about who we are & what espanyolet is without talking about the year we spent traveling the world, which left an indelible mark on us. So here goes: Brooklyn to Bali to Berlin to the Baleares….part one.
Mediterranean meets Scandinavian
Hidden off a quiet corner in a sleepy village on Mallorca’s west coast is an absolute treasure, and we were lucky to be invited in to see this beautiful property by our friend and real estate agent, Isabelle Degermark of Degermark Fine Homes. In preparation for listing it for sale, Isabelle asked Pernilla Danielsson and us to style & shoot the home to show it in its best light. We were greeted with the rawness of the overgrown & beguiling garden when we entered, perfectly paired with the soft & subtle Scandinavian style inside.
Designing interiors
It had been our dream to buy an old apartment and transform it with touches of espanyolet while also preserving its history. It was the perfect opportunity to flex our interior design muscles.
When we purchased this apartment in Berlin in early 2018, it was perfectly livable. It had been a rental, however, and various finishes & surfaces had been added in the 1990s which detracted from its original beauty, grandeur and history.
Mediterranean styling
Styling is all about the art of arranging objects. It is how you display pieces to create a beautiful arrangement or scene. It’s how you curate your collections. It’s how you edit your spaces. And to style well - and with confidence - you really need to learn the art and science of composition.
Artisan styling
Styling the most enviable historic homes on Mallorca has been another way for us to extend our creative reach & collaborate with an even larger group of artisans.
Making of.....a colorful couch
Do you ever feel like you want to know more about something you’ve seen on Instagram? We started this blog because we felt like we needed some type of platform to tell a story about the projects we design and the products we develop. And, oftentimes the ‘making of’ is even more rewarding than the final product. So here we have some of the ‘making of’ snapshots from this sofa project in Port de Soller, Spain, as well as more detail on how it all came together. Hop on down to learn more….
