Profile: Renovation of the General Jaime Garau mansion There are so many gems on this island, but we couldn't have anticipated one like this. New friends of ours -- she, an interior designer and he, an architect -- are restoring this breathtaking 28-room property built in 1890.
Chantal & Arndt acquired this property on auction and found it in complete disrepair. It had been abandoned for years, and squatters had littered it with graffiti & destroyed many of its historical relics. Over the course of two years, our friends have cleaned, cleared & burned all the trash and have started the painstaking work of restoring the house to its original glory.
The very top floor -- with its own separate entrance, probably for servants -- remained un-plastered. The original stones cut from the coastline & thick original wood beams remain. Chantal & Arndt rebuilt the staircase leading to the tower, which offers 270-degree views of Palma, the Cathedral and the Serra Tramuntana.
We are so excited about the project Chantal & Arndt have ahead of them. It's going to be an interesting few years to see this stunning home evolve. In the meantime, they are keeping their own blog with the historic preservation documented step by step. So many great pictures and stories…follow along here.
