We’re Thomas Bossert and Melissa Rosenbauer. Before espanyolet, we lived and worked in New York, where much of our creative life happened behind a computer. We wanted to use our hands again - to learn through materials, experiment and make things whose results we couldn’t entirely plan. That curiosity took us to Bali, where we explored ceramics, batik and natural dyeing, and eventually to Mallorca, where we began building a studio and a life.
Our first work here grew out of vintage linen and hemp sourced from markets across Europe. We painted the fabrics by hand, exploring how color behaved on their worn, uneven surfaces. Blankets became pillows, headboards and upholstered seating; working on individual pieces gradually drew us into the rooms around them. We began designing interiors, collaborating with local craftspeople and finding that many of the questions were familiar, whether we were working on a length of cloth or an entire house.
Living in Mallorca continues to shape how we see and work. We pay attention to what is already here: the materials, the buildings, the light, and the ways people adapt their homes to the seasons. Those observations inform our choices, alongside a willingness to try something, live with it and see where it leads.
Today, espanyolet brings together our work in interiors, textiles, art and objects, with room for new interests and collaborations. Making remains a thread through it all. We’re interested in what happens when we follow an idea far enough to give it a form - and in the conversations and discoveries that happen along the way.
